Lakadong Curcuma, a prized variety grown in Jaintia hills of Meghalaya, India, has earned a prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag (No. 741) on March 30, 2024. This recognition is more than just an official stamp; it safeguards the unique identity of this curcuma / turmeric, ensures quality for consumers, and empowers local farmers engaged in its cultivation.
Renowned for its exceptionally high curcumin content, ranging between 7-12%, Lakadong Curcuma is celebrated as a potent superfood with remarkable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is the bioactive compound that gives turmeric its medicinal benefits, making Lakadong one of the most sought-after varieties in the world.
However, the growing popularity of Lakadong Curcuma has led to the rise of counterfeit products. These so-called “dummy” products often bear the Lakadong name but are cultivated in other regions, which significantly impacts their curcumin content and overall quality. Even if the turmeric is from the same variety, the difference in soil composition, climate, and traditional farming methods in non-Lakadong regions results in a product that lacks the distinctive health benefits and purity associated with genuine Lakadong.
The GI mark is crucial in this context. It assures consumers that the product they are purchasing is authentically sourced from the Lakadong region in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. This not only guarantees the superior quality and curcumin potency but also supports the sustainable and traditional farming practices of the region. With approximately 14,000 farmers from 43 villages cultivating Lakadong Curcuma across 1,753 hectares, the GI tag fosters economic growth and protects the livelihoods of these farming communities.
Furthermore, the GI certification builds consumer confidence in the product. In an era where health-conscious individuals seek organic and natural remedies, the GI mark acts as a seal of authenticity. It assures buyers that they are investing in a product that is not only rich in health benefits but also ethically and sustainably produced.
By choosing GI-certified Lakadong Curcuma, costumer can be sure to reach the true benefits of this golden spice while contributing to the preservation of sustainable farming practices in the Lakadong region.
